A new organization to fight compulsive and problem gambling has been formed in Barbados and will be headed by Dr. Clarence Beverly. The Gamblers Anonymous group has been receiving positive response from the community as well as many appeals by family members of those with compulsive gambling tendencies. Beverly also said that people have been coming forward themselves in an attempt to beat their gambling problems and take control of the disorder.
The Barbados-based group's head said that even though the problem of gambling was not fore-fronted in the news it still definitely existed. It might be a silent problem, but not one that should be ignored, he continued. Dr. Beverly explained that his treatment method is not to attack the gambling system, but rather to try to help the gambler himself, because gambling in general is not the problem, compulsive gambling is. According to Dr. Beverly, world-wide only about 10% of people who gamble, have anything near to an addiction.
He continued that the most important element of overcoming a gambling problem was admitting that a person has one. Acceptance of a problem and acknowledgement of the need to receive treatment was half the way there. In the twelve step program which is offered, gamblers are taught how to deal with a gambling addiction and to overcome it, while still maintaining a normal lifestyle.
